Blain Brown   After studying at MIT and Harvard Graduate School of Design, Blain Brown moved to New York where he started as a freelance assistant to several prominent fashion and advertising still photographers including Rob Van Petten, Patrick Demarchelier and many others. As some of the photographers he worked with moved into shooting television commercials, he moved with them. Establishing himself as a specialist in lighting, he worked his way up to Director of Photography.

As a commercial photographer in his own right, he did illustration, people, table-top, product shots, catalog and fashion. He has also worked in the theater, as the director of an off-off Broadway repertory in New York.

He shot broadcast or spec commercials with well known photographers such as Beth Galton, Bernard Vidal, Alan Brooks, Joyce Tenneson and agency people such as Mark Sitley (then head of creative at Chiat/Day in New York). In 1996 he moved to California where he has been the Director of Photography on feature films, commercials, music videos and documentaries.

In the meantime he has written "Motion Picture and Video Lighting," which is used as a textbook at several film schools and the recently published "Cinematography: Imagemaking For Cinematographers, Directors and Videographers." Published by Focal Press in October, 2002, it has been adopted as the cinematography textbook at USC and several other film schools.
